What is a Geocoin?

A geocoin is a special coin (normally made of metal and can be round, shaped or 3D) that is made for geocaching and has a unique tracking number engraved on it. These coins are usually designed by geocachers and are often used as a signature item or calling card, and can be highly collectible. Because the coins each have their own tracking number, they can 'activated' and then be logged online by geocachers each time they are retrieved or placed in different caches, or can also be 'discovered' by geocachers during their travels or at events

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a global game of hiding and seeking 'treasure' which began in 2000. A geocacher can place a geocache (some sort of sealed waterproof container like Tupperware or a film canister) anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache using the given coordinates. When you find the container you sign the logbook, and can trade items that you may find in the cache, then log your find on its page online. Now with over 2 million caches hidden around the world, it is a great way to get outdoors,  and discover places you would have never found before. It's especially good when you are travelling to a new town or country as they are often hidden at viewpoints, landmarks and places with historical interest.
